Prices of food items soar phenomenally

With the advent of holy month of Ramazan, skyrocketing increase was witnessed in the prices of perishable and non- perishable food items last week as compared to the preceding week, reveals a survey conducted by Business Recorder on Saturday. Traders from different markets of the twin cities of Rawalpindi/ Islamabad told the prices of vegetables, fruits, milk fresh, yogurt, basin, dates significantly increased last week as compared to the preceding week.
They maintained that around 20-30 percent increase had been witnessed in the prices of vegetables, adding that record increase was witnessed in the prices of tomato, which was available at Rs 100-120 against Rs 80-85 per kg week past price, reflecting an increase of Rs 20-40 per kg. They said onions were available at Rs 70-80 per kg against Rs 60 per kg week past price, registering an increase of Rs 10-20 per kg.
They said basin, used for preparing Samosa and Pakora, witnessed an increase of Rs 25 per kg. Last week it was available at Rs 110 per kg and at present its price touched Rs 135 per kg, fresh milk is being sold at Rs 90 per litre, yogurt at Rs 90, live chicken is being sold at Rs 190-200, eggs were being sold at Rs 80-88 per dozen, vegetable ghee loose at Rs 168 per kg last week as compared to the preceding week.
The survey noted steep increase in fruit prices last week as compared to the preceding week as prices of different fruits including bananas, mangoes, apples, grapes, peaches and watermelons increased by 20 percent to 80 percent. Banana was available at Rs 180-240 per dozen against Rs 120-150 per dozen week past price, reflecting an increase of Rs 60-90 per dozen; mango was being sold at Rs 120-200 per kg against Rs 100-150 week past price, registering an increase of Rs 20-50 per kg, grapes were available at Rs 300 per kg against Rs 200 per kg week past price, reflecting an increase of Rs 100 per kg; Garma at Rs 80 per kg, watermelon Rs 50-60 per kg and peaches were being sold at Rs 100 per kg.
Meanwhile, meat prices remained unchanged last week as compared to the preceding week, as mutton was available at 600-620 per kg, while beef was being sold at Rs 280-300per kg. The survey noted that dates were being sold at Rs 150/200 per kg, Pakora at Rs 240 per kg, Jalebi at Rs 240 per kg, Samosa were being sold at Rs 120 per dozen last week as compared to the preceding week.
